Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef or Italian sausage
  • ½ lb 225 g pepperoni slices
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup mushrooms sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 ½ cups low-carb marinara or pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat
  3. Add diced onion and cook until soft and translucent
  4. Stir in minced garlic and sauté for 30–40 seconds until fragrant
  5. Add ground beef or sausage and break it apart while cooking
  6. Cook until fully browned and no pink remains
  7. Drain excess grease to avoid an oily casserole
  8. Add mushrooms and bell peppers to the skillet
  9. Cook for 3–4 minutes until slightly softened but still firm
  10. Pour in marinara or pizza sauce and stir well
  11. Add Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and chili flakes
  12. Let the mixture simmer for 3–5 minutes to develop flavor
  13. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly
  14. Transfer the mixture into the greased baking dish
  15. Spread evenly to create the base layer
  16. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese over the mixture
  17. Add a layer of pepperoni slices evenly across the top
  18. Sprinkle remaining mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese
  19. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes
  20. Bake until cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden
  21. Switch to broil for 2–3 minutes for a crispy cheesy top
  22. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving
  23. Slice and serve warm
